2009 Corn Harvest
The following links address this year's corn harvest. These are first in a series of papers that include recommendations and guidelines for the 2009 corn crop from UW Agronomist Joe Lauer. There will be additional papers posted as they are completed, on a weekly basis. Additional information can be found at: http://fyi.uwex.edu/grain/
UW-Feed Grain Evaluation System
Beginning August 1, 2009, we will be offering a new analysis of feed grains. The test will be called the UW-Feed Grain Evaluation System. In this system we will be analyzing grains for the principle components of feed grains that directly effect digestibility and performance of dairy cows. The components are particle size, moisture, and prolamine protein content of the grain. The analysis for prolamine protein is a two day test so results will take a day or so longer in getting back to you. The cost will be $44.00. The following link will help you understand the analysis. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call. http://www.uwex.edu/ces/dairynutrition/
Improved NDF Digestibility for Hay & Haylages/Silage
Rock River Laboratory, Inc. is offering NDF Digestibility using a new and improved method. The new method is the Combs-Goeser method and is described in the document listed below, Additional Information . We will not drop the former method from our reports but will give you both. The previous results will be listed on our reports as the “Traditional” NDFd, while the new method will be the “Standardized” NDFd. We will also be offering a new package called NDF Digestibility Profile . NDF Digestibility Profile will use NIR or wet chemistry Standardized NDFd 24, 30, and 48 hour results to develop a digestion profile for your sample. Digestibility at any time point between 24 and 48 hours can be determined from the NDF Digestibility Profile graph. Additional Information Technical Info Example Report
Same Day Mineral Analysis

**New Lime Requirement Calculations**
Starting February 15th, 2007, all Wisconsin
certified soil-testing labs are required to use new
lime requirement calculations. The new calculations
are part of the 2007 revision of the UW Extension
publication A-2809, Nutrient Application Guidelines for Field, Vegetable, and Fruit Crops.
In addition to the new calculation, soil labs are
required to replace the SMP buffer with the new,
safer, Sikora buffer. This means that buffer pH
results prior to February 15th, 2007 cannot be used in the new calculations. For more information on
this change, please click here for answers to frequently asked questions.
